Cubic Receives Award from American Public Transportation Association
for Contributions to Smart Card Standards Development

Cubic Transportation Systems received an award from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) for the company’s contributions to development of Universal Transit Farecard Standards & Guidelines for transit fare collection systems by their participation in Work Packages 1, 3 & 4. The award was handed out during the 2005 APTA Annual Meeting & Expo in Dallas at the end of September.

The award was accepted by Mr. Walt Bonneau, vice president of Transit Technology, on behalf of Cubic. Cubic is a participant on all of APTA’s Work Packages, which are subcommittees of APTA’s Systems Work Group comprising participants from industry and transit authorities. Cubic’s Brian Monk, Dave Andrews, Pradip Mistry, and Walt Bonneau were singled out for their significant contributions to development of these standards.

Cubic’s technical contributions enabled the groups to develop and release to APTA documents containing the necessary guidelines and standards to support an interoperable transit proximity smart card environment, including the communications to and from the smart card reader.

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) began the effort to develop the WP-1 & WP-4 projects, providing specifications necessary for the APTA committee to build on.

The WP1 interoperable card data format, otherwise known as the Regional Interoperability Specification (RIS) Part 3, is currently being used by Cubic Transportation Systems for The Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) and Port Authority Transit Corporation (PATCO) fare collection projects in the New York / New Jersey Region.

The standard is currently being reviewed as a possible national standard for development of large scale, regional smart card fare collections systems.
